Sixteen species of the genus Phaedon Latreille are revised and illustrated from China, including five new species described herein, namely P. geminatus sp. nov., P. huizuensis sp. nov., P. igori sp. nov., P. insolitus sp. nov., P. prosternalis sp. nov. All species are redescirbed or original described. Figures of important morphological features are provided. The natural history of some species are provided including the host plants records. A key to species of Phaedon from China is presented. The type specimens of the new species described here are deposited in Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IZCAS), Mauro Daccordi collection (MDC), Horst Kippenberg collection (HKC) and Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences (ZIN).

The well-known ciliate, Mesodinium Stein, 1863, is of great importance to marinemicrobial food webs and is related to the "red tides". However, it is possibly one of the mostconfusing ciliate taxa in terms of its systematic position: either the morphologicalor the molecular data excluded it from all the other known assemblages or groups. In the current work, the sequences of small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) genesfor all isolates available are analysed and an examination of the secondary structurepatterns of related groups is carried out. The results indicate that (1) Mesodinium invariably represents a completely separated and isolated clade positionedbetween two subphyla of ciliates with very deep branching, which indicates thatthey should be a primitive or ancestral group for the subphylum Intramacronucleata;(2) the secondary structure of the SSU rRNA of Mesodinium species is unusual in that, while the secondary structureof V4 in Mesodinium sp. has the deletionscommon to all litostome ciliates, it has more extensive deletions in helix E23_8and a longer helix E23_1; (3) combiningthe phylogenetic and morphological information, we suggest establishing Mesodiniea cl. nov. , including the order MesodiniidaGrain, 1994, belonging to the subphylum Intramacronucleata.

One new genus and four new species of eriophyoid mitesfromHainan,Chinaare described and illustratedin this paper: Dicoxiseta Wang, Tan& Yang, gen. nov., D. litsea Wang, Tan & Yang, sp. nov. infesting Litsea monopetala (Roxb.) Pers. (Lauraceae), Eriophyes casearius Wang, Yang &Tan, sp. nov. infesting Casearia glomerata Roxb.(Flacourtiaceae), Phyllocoptruta alstonia Wang, Gu & Tan, sp. nov. infesting Alstonia scholaris (L.) R.Br. (Apocynaceae) and Aculus paederius Wang,Gu & Tan, sp. nov. infesting Paederia scandens (Lour.) Merr.(Rubiaceae). Tegolophus artocarpi Keifer,1977 is newly recorded fromChina. E. casearius Wang, Yang & Tan, sp. nov. distorts severely new foliageof its host plant. Three species, P.alstonia Wang, Gu & Tan, sp.nov., A. paederius Wang, Gu &Tan, sp. nov. and T. artocarpi, cause rust on theundersurfaces of host plants, while D.litsea Wang, Tan & Yang, sp.nov. is a vagrant on the undersurface of host plant leaves, without visiblesymptom.

A water mite species is described as new to science, Atractides (Tympanomegapus) aprojectus sp. nov. The maleof Atractides (Tympanomegapus) huaxiensis Yi & Jin, 2010 is described for the first time from GuizhouProvince, China. The materials were collected during a survey in 2011from the rivers in Guizhou. The specimens are deposited in the Institute ofEntomology, Guizhou University (GUGC).

Anew species of the Drosophila obscura speciesgroup is described here, namely Drosophila glabra sp. nov. It was recently found from the Maoershan National Nature Reserve, Guangxi,China. The characteristics of the new species are based not only onmorphological characters but also on DNA sequences of the mitochondrial COII (cytochrome c oxidasesubunit II) gene.

The Northern Eurasia origin hypothesis is one key pointin the evolutionary model. This indicates that species riginated in Northern Eurasia. Perdix, belonging to Phasianidae of Galliformes,is a valuable type of wildfowl widely distributed Northern Eurasia and containsthree species. This mini-review discusses the taxonomic status, phylogeny, and originof Perdix. Morphological and molecularevidence suggest that the three species, P. hodgsoniae, P. dauuricae and P. perdix, form a monophyletic group and they should be classified as “pheasant” ratherthan “quail.” The current review also shows that results were affected by the methodsselected for data analysis. A taxonomic category should contain as many speciesas possible, have a clear system history, remain evolutionarily stable, and lackadaptive radiation. Appropriate type, number and length of genes are important asmolecular markers and out-group affects the bootstrap support value. P. hodgsoniae is located at the root of thephylogenetic tree and has the phenotype of ancestral Perdix. The genus Perdix mayoriginate in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau andexpanded into high latitude areas, towards the northern plateau. This phylogeneticand evolutionary statement differs from the Eurasian origin hypothesis.
