Bonasa sewerzowi, the smallest and most southerly distributed grouse species in the world, is a bird endemic to China. The population of B. sewerzowi had shown a declining trend, which made it to be the endangered species in the China Red Data Book and Category I of nationally protected animals. So far, however, most studies about this species were mainly focused on the morphological and ecological aspects. In order to further study the feature of B. sewerzowi, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of B. sewerzowi was sequenced by Illumina Hiseq 2000 high-throughput sequencing. Then, we focused on comparative genomics of two Bonasa species to find their characteristics. Finally, phylogenetic position of Bonasa was made based on the mitogenome dataset. Our results revealed that: (1) the mitogenome of B. sewerzowi, consisting of 16 658 bp, displayed typical genome organization and gene order found in other previously determined Galliformes mitogenomes; (2) the structure and composition of mitogenomes were similar between B. sewerzowi and B. bonasia; (3) the monophyly of Bonasa was well supported, which had a closer phylogenetic relationship with Meleagris gallopavo.

A new tintinnid ciliate, Tintinnopis estuariensis sp. nov. was found in the estuary of Yangtze River, China. It was most abundant in September. Its arenaceous lorica is cylindro-conical in shape, (120–180) μm × (50–75) μm in size, agglutinated with mineral particles, and open at both ends. Two characters distinguish it from others: the unique lateral flattened posterior portion with a vertical aboral opening and wider oral diameter. It occurred in water with surface temperature of 14–27°C and surface salinity of 3.9‰–29.8‰.

A comparative morphological research was done based on the morphological characters of 21 species from Leptura in this paper. The results indicated that 18 morphological characters, such as the ratio of the lower eye lobe to genae, the relative length of antennae segments, the shape of maxillary palpi apex, prothorax, elytra apex and elytral maculae can be used to identify species in the genus. Meanwhile, the color of elytra and the size of elytral maculae could not be used to identify species from Leptura. In addition, the shape of 7th abdominally sternal apex, the length of antennae and the ratio of the first hind tarsal segment to the second can be used to distinguish the male and the female

Four species of the genus Prochiloneurus Silvestri, belonging to the family Encyrtidae of Hymenoptera, are reported from China. Among them, P. stenopterus Wang, Huang & Xu sp. nov., which is reared as the hyperparasitoid of Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), an invasive mealybug to China, is reported as new to science. A key of the genus is provided for the recognition of the females of Chinese species. Notes on the parasitoid and hyperparasitoid of the mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis are provided.

A new barbine cyprinid fish, Acrossocheilus multistriatus sp. nov., is described from the Zhujiang River (Pearl River) basin in South China. It is separated from all other barred congeners except A. monticola by its unique coloration pattern of 8–12 vs. 5–7 vertical dark bars on the dorsum and flank. Although 8 vertical black bars are also present in specimens of A. monticola, the new species is distinct from it by having a well-developed (vs. poor-developed) lower lip, with or without a median interruption (vs. with a median interruption which wider than 1/2 mouth width) on lower jaw, the lower jaw entirely covered (vs. uncoverd) by the lower lip, body depth 22.57%–25.22% SL (vs. 25.64%–32.26% SL). Additional characteristices as follows: last simple dorsal-fin ray soft without serration; dark stripes on membranes between dorsal-fin rays; dark stripes absent on membranes between anal fin rays; maxillary barbels longer than eye diameter, extending to posterior edge of eyes.
