This paper summarizes the advances and challenges in spider taxonomy of China. A table comparing the number of valid genera and species in China, Europe and the world is provided. To date, the Chinese spider fauna is represented by 5,084 species, under 809 genera in 69 spider families. An “All Species Inventory” of spiders in Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden provides an example of China’s spider species richness, with more than 782 species recorded within a small area. Intensified research in recent years has grown the national catalog of Chinese spiders from 1,050 species in 1983 to 5,084 species today. There are reasons to believe that spider species richness in China will far exceed this grand total. With enhanced support and investment in spider taxonomic research, many more new species will be discovered and described in China

The 4th Systematic Biology Forum, China took place in December 2019, covering a vast array of topics across animals, bacteria, fungi, plants, and viruses in the fields of systematics and evolutionary biology. Here, we discuss the emergent themes of this meeting and how these and other interdisciplinary research programs can be synthesized to better understand evolution in a systematic framework.

Reliable delimitation of venomous scorpions is not only consequential to toxicological studies but also instructive to conservation and exploration of these important medical resources. In the present study, we delimited species boundary for the the Przewalski’s scorpion from arid northwest China through a combined approach employing phylogenetic analysis, ecological niche modeling and morphological comparison. Our results indicate that the Przewalski’s scorpion represent an independent taxonomic unit and should be recognized as full species rank, Mesobuthus przewalskii stat. nov. This species and the Chinese scorpion M. martensii represent the eastern members of the M. caucasicus species group which manifests a trans-Central Asia distribution across the Tianshan Mountains range. We also discussed the likely geographic barrier and climatic boundary that demarcate distributional range of the the Przewalski’s scorpion.

Dysderidae C. L. Koch, 1837 is reported from China for the first time. A new species of the genus Dysdera Latreille, 1804, D. dushengi sp. nov. from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is described based on both sexes. The new species is closely related to D. pamirica Dunin, 1992, a species known from adjacent Tajikistan.

Two new species of the Tenthredo grahami group of Tenthredinidae, Hymenoptera, from Sichuan and Tibet of China are described here, namely T. nigrobullifera sp. nov. and T. megamaculata sp. nov. A diagnosis and a revised key to species of the Tenthredo grahami group are provided. All type specimens of the new species are deposited in the Asian Sawfly Museum, Nanchang, China (ASMN).

Two new species of the subgenus Oxyporus of the genus Oxyporus Fabricius, 1775, Oxyporus (Oxyporus) jiangi sp. nov. and O. (O.) wenchuanus sp. nov. from Wolong Natural Reserve, Sichuan Province, China, are described. Thus, the species of the genus Oxyporus is up to 133 worldwide. Images of the dosal habitus and male sexual characters of the new species are provided. A key to the species of subgenus Oxyporus of Sichuan Province is provided. All type specimens are deposited in College of Life Science, China West Normal University, Sichuan.

Female internal reproductive systems of nine species in the genus Tipula are described and illustrated, namely T. (Beringotipula) amurensis Alexander, 1925, T. (Lunatipula) lunata Linnaeus, 1758, T. (Lunatipula) submanca Savchenko, 1964, T. (Pterelachisus) biaciculifera Alexander, 1937, T. (Sivatipula) parvauricula Alexander, 1941, T. (Vestiplex) longitudinalis Nielsen, 1929, T. (Vestiplex) sternotuberculata Alexander, 1935, T. (Yamatotipula) couckei Tonnoir, 1921 and T. (Yamatotipula) marginella Theowald, 1980. The morphological differences of internal reproductive organs for these species are listed. Additionally, taxonomic potential of some internal reproductive structures are analyzed and discussed.

A new species of Chaetarthria Stephens, 1835, is described from China, namely Chaetarthria chenjuni Jia & Yang, sp. nov. from Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces, China. It is unique in the C. indica group by having the distinct punctures, as strong as those of puncture series, on the elytra. The broad median lobe of aedeagus has a round apex, which can be used to separate it easily from other known species occurring in the Oriental Region.
